There's no time to get bored on an active holiday in Montenegro! Whether you love adventure, find beaches a bore, or just want to stay in shape and have fun, the staggering beauty and variety of outdoor activities in this tiny country will give you a holiday to remember.
By a combination of boat, kayak and 4x4, you'll discover why Montenegro is Europe's best-kept secret! From rafting at Tara, the world's second deepest canyon, hiking amid the jaw-dropping mountain vistas of Durmitor National Park, and kayaking the mirrored waters of vast Lake Skadar, the Balkans' largest lake at 400 square kilometres, there's astonishing scenery as standard.
Your first week is based at Lake Skadar National Park, immersed in wild natural beauty as you hike to natural springs, caves and fishing villages, plunge into waterfalls, kayak along carpets of waterlilies and go canyoning and mountain biking at the nearby coast. Your accommodation options for this week are in picturesque little Virpazar, the lake's main access point and just a 30 minute drive to the Adriatic sea.
The last three days take in Montenegro's incredible and mountainous North. Staying at a traditional ethno-village, you'll get to paddle and hike to all the best spots.
This is a tailormade holiday. A sample itinerary is below. Trip dates are fully flexible and available any time between May-September.
Excursion 1: Lake Skadar explore & discovery day
An unforgettable car and hiking combination tour (hike is 3-4 hours). We drive past breathtaking views, hike to rock-pools for wild swimming, visit bat-inhabited caves before lunching at a former royal residence in historic Rijeka Crnojevića. We jump back in the 4x4 for more stunning views, wild river swimming and then head across a magnificent plain that would not look out of place in Africa. The breathtaking view from the ancient fort of Zabljak Crnojevića is our final stop before returning to Virpazar.
Excursion 2: Kayak to the island monasteries
Suitable for all levels of fitness, this 4-5 hour kayak trip will take you across stunning mirrored waters from Murići on the southern shores, (also home to the lake's best freshwater beach), with views up to the fabled peaks of Albania's Accursed Mountains. You'll have the lake all to yourself as you swim in crystal clear waters and visit the lake's renowned 14th century island monastaries, all the while taking in the awesome views, varied bird-life and glorious solitude.
Suitable for beginners too - your guide is a qualified instructor!
Excursion 3: Coastal canyoning trip
Experience an ultimate high by going canyoning just an hour from Lake Skadar at 'Stari Bar'. Close to this coastal town of Roman, Venetian and Ottoman ruins - itself a must-see attraction - lies a hidden spot perfect for all abilities to experience the thrill of this sport. Under the eye of a fully qualified, licensed and English speaking instructor, you will climb and rappel through a stunning gorge to a hidden natural pool of immeasurable beauty. No prior experience is necessary and the trip is even suitable for families with kids of 10+.
Excursion 4: Mountain-biking above Kotor Bay
The views from this circular route high on the plateau above the bay of Kotor are little short of phenomenal. This UNESCO heritage site is not be missed, with a stroll at ground level before you begin, then an ascent up the 26 switchbacks of Cattaro's ladder and then descent on the old road to Risan with spectacular views as standard. Cycling time is around 4 hours - this trip is usually done in the morning and completes by midday to avoid overcooking!
Mountain bike rental included.
Excursion 5: Walnut Valley hike
Our favourite hike - this circular trail passes through ancient
woodland, across arched Ottoman bridges and along riverside trails
and old Roman caravan paths as it winds its way through one of Lake Skadar's most beautiful valleys. We stop for wild swimming in natural spring-fed pools before hiking to a beautiful hillside village for lunch with a local family. This is unspoiled and undisturbed nature, with wild figs, herbs and tortoises in abundance! Best of all, you won't have to share them with other tourists; this is our secret!
Excursion 6: Hiking in Durmitor National Park
The trail begins at Crno Jezero (the Black Lake), which is a 40-minute walk from "base camp". An hour and a half of gentle walking takes us to Jablan Jezero, another glacial lake, the trail passing through some lovely meadows before descending to the green waters of the lake, perfectly framed and sheltered by the sheer cliffs of Crvena Greda. After a brief pause we then follow the trail that leads up to the top of Crvena Greda (2175m). There are great fantastic views down to the lake on the way up, and into the heart of the mountains and valleys from the top. Hiking time is 6-7 hours.
Excursion 7: White-water rafting on the Tara
The second deepest canyon in the world (after the Grand Canyon), rafting on the whitewater of the Tara river is a thrilling experience! It's wet, wild and yet safe enough even for young children. All transport and an English-speaking guide are included on this awesome excursion. Minimum age: 9. Trip duration: 2-3 hours. Please note that groups of less than 6 should expect to join another rafting group.
