For 2017 we are delighted to offer a unique experience on Skadar Lake. Canoe or kayak for 5 days around on the lake and see the real beauty of this amazing location, bringing you closer to nature! You will cover a distance of c.65 km through all the different environments the lake has to offer. The week will have a big bushcraft influence; you will learn more about the flora and fauna, you will sleep in canvas 'baker' tents next to the lake shore, enjoy cooking on campfires you'll start yourselves, watch millions of stars in the evening and practice some new skills. Friction fire lighting, spoon carving, cooking on a campfire, gathering herbs/plants, fishing and birdwatching (as well as paddling!), the week is suitable for almost all levels of fitness and a must-do for nature enthusiasts, families or anyone who wants to try a new way of travelling and enjoy the outdoors.
Equipment: We supply all boats (16' Canadian canoes or Z-Pro Tango inflatable kayaks, please specify your preference) and safety equipment.
Matthieu isn't just the newest member of team UM - he's a fully qualified canoe and kayaking guide with a passion for bushcraft and wilderness survival. Matthieu stopped off at Lake Skadar whilst cycling to Asia from Belgium (for the second time!) and liked it so much he stayed. He speaks English, Flemish/Dutch and some Montenegrin.
Day 1 - Arrival
Arrival at Virpazar from your arrival airport and short transfer to the basecamp situated in a beautiful woodland in the National Park. In the evening we will have a tasty organic diner at Koral biofarm where everyone can get to know each other a bit better before the adventure begins the following day.
Day 2 - Bobavišta to Murići
Breakfast at basecamp. Transfer to the starting point of our canoe trip, close to the Albanian border. On the first day we only cover a small distance to become familiar with the boats and to learn some paddling strokes. During the day we will have stunning views over the lake and see the Albanian Alps in the distance. Before we arrive at our camping spot we will visit Beška, an island with a beautiful monastery. We put up camp next to Murići beach, the biggest beach on the lake and enjoy an evening swim and of course a campfire. Paddling distance: 8km
Day 3 - Murić to Virpazar via Raduš
Canoeing along the southern shores of the lake, we will visit the little fishermans' village of Raduš, hidden in a beautiful bay. Lidia and Danilo, two locals, will provide a lunch served together with a splendid view over the bay. Fresh fish soup and fried carp from the lake will be on the menu. After lunch we paddle towards Grmožur, the old prison island and continue to Virpazar. We sleep back at the basecamp where there will be a possibility to have a warm outdoor shower. Paddling distance: 18km
Day 4 - Virpazar to Žabljak Crnojevića
We will journey through a totally different environment on the lake, swapping from open water to small waterways, lily pad fields and lots of birdlife. We paddle around deserted islands with jaw-dropping views over the hills and mountains around this part of the lake. We put up camp on a little island, a perfect opportunity to do some fishing or do some birdwatching. An extra option is an evening paddling trip under the stars to 'Malo Blato' a smaller lake connected with Lake Skadar. Paddling distance: 17km
Day 5 - Žabljak Crnojevića to Morača Delta
In the morning we visit an ancient citadel on top of a hill, from where we will have a perfect view over the floodplains and surroundings. There will be a small portage with the boats to connect two waterways. After that we will continue by paddling down the Morača river, which is the biggest river flowing into Lake Skadar. The blue water coming from the mountains is a special thing to see. We camp close to the Morača Delta, near a renowned birding reserve, with the chance to also visit the nearby St. Nikola's monastery. Paddling distance: 12km
Day 6 - Morača Delta to the old smugglers' channels
On the last paddling day there is a great chance to see the famous Dalmatian pelican. We move through the 'Manastirska Tapija' nature reserve and continue along the reed fields on the northern shores of the lake. The view over Skadar Lake from this side is mind blowing. For the last 3km of the trip we will follow a beautiful and pristine river full of kingfishers and other birds. Paddling distance: 12km
Day 7 - return and rest!
We enjoy the last breakfast of the trip. Transfer to basecamp and the rest of the day is free for everyone. There will be the possibility to finish off your carved spoon, go for a walk in the forest, identify some butterflies and dragonflies or other flora and fauna. For the people who want to explore on their own, there is plenty to discover in walking distance from the basecamp. We will have a last dinner together at a local farmstead where the owner will prepare for us some typically tasty, local dishes.
If you wish, for an extra £ 35pp you can choose to stay in a local 3-star hotel for your last night. Day 8 - Departure
